Regular followers of my blog will be familiar with our solar pumps – we’re now up to 110 of them out working in the fields. But yesterday we saw something quite new and equally ingenious – the Barsha Pump.

.

The pump uses nothing but the flow of the river to pump water onto the adjacent land – 26,000litres every 24 hours, which is pretty impressive. (we checked that with a 20 litre bucket, a stopwatch and some primary school arithmetic!) We’re sticking to the power of the sun for the time being but it’s great that bright people are coming up with simple, affordable solutions to help farmers in Malawi.

We came across this wee guy while we were inspecting the pump. The question is, is he cute or ugly? Either way, I wasn’t getting too close…
